hey..i need help writing an english essay…i need some pointers on how to start it off and how exactly to write an essay..points to take on board to get the highest marks i can!
its actually a personal essay but i missed school the day the teacher was talking about it so im not really sure what a personal essay is???
the titles are as follows which one do you think i should write about??
“write a personal essay on the idealism and passions of youth”
“Lets stop all this pretense!Lets tell eachother the unvarnished truth for a change”write a personal essay in response to this statement!
“my take on recent history”write a personal essay in which you discuss your views on a recent event/events
“she was expected to carry on as she was, she was expected to take on the family business”write a personal essay on the part which other peoples expectations play in our lives.

In general, I would advise against anything except a personal essay; this is your own response to the topic and probably the highest point-getter thingy. Narrative can get boring, repetitive and unless you have a talent for creative writing I would advise against it. If you think you can pull it off though, you go for it!

If I were given that choice I’d write the ‘Unvarnished Truth’ one. I did actually write it when we had the choice of it.. Now bear in mind that it was at the beginning of 5th year so my standard of vocabulary leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Genuineness is a difficult thing to come by in today’s pretentious facade we’ve come to understand the media to be. Everybody with the sense to alert themselves to the lies and muddled truth they’re being fed through every imaginable medium; television, radio, newspapers magazines and billboards being only the obvious day-to day appearances, each person trying desperately to shield him or herself from the propaganda and speculation tries in vain, for even those whose intelligence surpasses that of most others cannot help but heed at least soe of the rubbish as they discuss the days news or current events with their peers. Lies seep in on us through every crack we foolishly leave uncovered. I have a firm belief that even in this time of such advancement, in this era of democratic society and freedom of thought, conscience and speech; that in major news sources across the globe the governments have a large say in what’s to be put across to the nations. Perhaps not unbiased in all of their opinions are stations such as CNN or the BBC, but I’ve frequently heard of cases where the leaders of the country have decided that the public should only hear the side of the story that makes they appear protagonistic. Though this is speculation, and this is what my plight is whole-heartedly opposed to, I cannot help but take into consideration recent instances such as where the BBC put out that the man shot shortly after the London train bombings was innocent in that he had not been involved, but ‘illegally in the country’, a fact which was untrue, and which greatly distressed his already bereaved family. Even if this had proved true it was in no way an adequate excuse for having shot the man. Sounds rather like the media were covering up somebody’s mistake if you ask me.

That was an extremely long first paragraph! I don’t do them that long anymore, and I generally set out my points of information (three or four, because I tend to write between six and eight pages). I discussed the points ‘Law Enforcement’s Ingenuity’, ‘Celebrity Fantasy Worlds’ and ‘Religious Pseudo-Tolerance’.

      I closed with:
But society is doomed to live in the belief that all of their information sources are reliable, somebody else can protect them, being beautiful physically is essential and religion can unite us all someday, seemingly.[/b]

I would recommend you do it in sections, with paragraphs within the sections:
      1. Introduce your points
      2. Point 1, paragraph 1, 2, 3
      3. Point 2, paragraph 1, 2, 3
      4. Point 3, paragraph 1, 2, 3
      5. Conclusion (basically wrap up why the points are relevant to the topic)
But this is just how I write. Different styles suit different people.

Don’t forget that marking scheme thing. There’s some initials. PORN or something stupid like that. Every other leaving cert student will probably know it now.. MILF or something..

Unlike TehBuhmDiggeee said, I wouldn’t do the personal essay – I’d be looking at the newspaper article, magazine article or talk/speech (informative, persuasive and arguemntative uses of language) – these are the easiest to write on.

Your answer has to actually answer the question (a quality the marker looks for) and this is why these three written mediums work best – they actually set out to achieve a task determinedly (persuade an audience of something, inform an audience of something, argue a point), unlike a short story or personal essay which do not have as definitive an aim. Their task is not suited to answering in an exam question – if you are arguing, persuading or informing the task is a lot easier and you know where you are going. A short story or personal essay has to be appreciated by the marker to be answering the question and this is a lot more difficult to show than simply informing an audience of a world problem, persuading someone a world problem needs attention, arguing about the need to adress a world problem etc.

A personal essay is an essay where you focus on a specific incident/happening/routine and tell it in an engaging way.

Is it? I seem to like the same type of essay-writing style as you so. I just never knew it! Thank you for your insight..

In my opinion i feel its alot easier to write about personal expierences…it makes it alot easier to describe your feelings…the setting etc..

Also if you write a really amazing essay u are proud of,LEARN IT OFF!!
usually u can adapt an essay 4m title to title!!
      hope dt helped!!:D
      xx

the problem is is that the amazing essay has to be judged amazing by the examiner – its a lot tougher to show them your answer uses aesthetic language to an extent that is enough to get you full marks than it is to simply put a fully formed argument on the page which they cannot but take notice of

    • #16199

The examiner always goes for the personal experience element. Personally I just can’t do personal experience!! tongue.gif

Personally I think the examiner will go for whatever you’ve written, if it’s written well enough..

DOING THE PRE PAPER ONE I HADNT EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT ESSAYS..WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING YOU FIND INTEREST ON..AND BRING HUMOUR OR SOMETHING INTO IT. I FOUND IT EASIER THEN THINKING UP SOME BORIN 10 PAGE ESSAY WHERE I TALK THRU MY ASS. IM TELLING YA..WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN AND DAT UR PASSIONATE ABOUT. OR ELSE WRITE ABOUT AN EVENT IN YOUR LIFE OR A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND DESCRIBE IT WITH AS MUCH DETAIL AS YOU CAN REMEMBER FROM THE DIFFERENT COLOURS TO THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS

      VOTE DONNE!

I find the shory story is the easiest thing to do because, for those of you who are worried about the composition you can learn one or two off and just regurgitate them in the exam…they’re great because so long as you have a structure your imagination can take over, and if you command of the language is good then you should end up with relatively high marks!! Also the titles are very broad and you are allowed interpret themin your own way

The Essay is worth 100 marks, and is worth nothing without technique.

Like myself, you probably arent a novelist in training so use style to make your essay better. Your essay doesnt have to have edge of the seat excitment just alot of techniques to make your writing come alive.

Use the following and it will dramaticly increase your essay.
      -metaphor
      -smile
      -dialogue
-appeal to sense such as touch smell not just sight.
      -antic dotes
      -description
      -colour
      -aggeration
      -humour
-refer to stuff ie gucci, mc donalds, Brown Tomas.

Have a strong start- Either use a antic dote, short sentence or dialogue. Catch the reader attention!

at the end- Either reiderate the question, take a different stance of it or whatever just make it dramatic!!

Without a doubt answering the short story question is your easiest option. also the best one. You pick up marks easily and it’s all about plot/aestethics. Easy 100 points. All you have to do is write a grade A story, and then fine tune it for whatever question pops up, they are easy to adapt and just good for points.
